Nupur School of Rabindrasangeet is an institution dedicated to promoting the rich cultural heritage and literary genius of the great Bengali poet and Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore. It was established in 1980 with the objective of providing children born to Bengali-speaking parents in this country with the opportunity of getting acquainted with the culture and traditions of Bengal. Today, however, the group consists mainly of adults. The school specialises in teaching Rabindrasangeet (Tagore’s songs) and strives towards spreading the ideals and teachings of Rabindranath Tagore, the great Bengali poet, teacher and philosopher. Founded by Mrs Pompa Dhar, a much renowned exponent of Tagore songs in India and the UK over the last 40 years, NUPUR specialises in teaching Rabindra Sangeet- songs of Tagore.

Since its establishment Nupur has staged several major public performances which have included most of Tagore’s dance dramas performed at prestigious locations like the Commonwealth Institute and Logan Hall, London University. In 1986 Nupur students participated in the celebration of Tagore’s 125th anniversity at Queen Elizabeth Hall, arranged by “Tagoreans”, a well known organisation in the UK. NUPUR has staged several major public performances of Tagore’s dance dramas and other musical works at prestigious venues across London and the UK. In February 2008, NUPUR conducted a successful tour of India – staging a much acclaimed programme in Kolkata followed by an invitation to perform at Sangeet Bhavan, Shantiniketan – the university founded by Rabindranath Tagore himself. Nupur has also presented in London, a number of celebrated singers and musicians from India and Bangladesh.

We are a voluntary organisation and offer a 5 year diploma and certificate course with a structured syllabus of Tagore’s songs including voice training and theory in the curriculum.
